William “Billy” Smyth is the founding attorney of LawSmyth, APC, a law firm dedicated to providing valuable guidance in estate planning, trust and probate administration, and trust and estate litigation. With over 15 years of experience practicing law in California, William is recognized for delivering client-focused solutions with precision and care.
Professional Background
After being admitted to the California State Bar in 2009, I had the privilege and pleasure of starting my professional journey at my family’s law firm located on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, CA. Established by his father and his uncle in 1974, in the heart of the “Miracle Mile,” Smyth Law Office provided a wide range of legal services to its clients. While primarily focusing on consumer bankruptcy law, Smyth Law Office also helped clients with landlord-tenant, family law, probate, and general civil litigation matters.
After joining the family firm in 2009, I was able to learn, grow, and expand my scope of knowledge. I found that I really enjoyed meeting with clients, hearing and appreciating their stories, listening with empathy and attention, understanding their goals, and providing practical solutions.
Starting in 2015, I decided to focus my attention on trust and estate matters where I believed I could use my strengths to make a difference and provide the most value to my clients. I began representing individuals and families crafting comprehensive estate plans, guiding clients through the probate and trust administration process, and litigating disputes to protect my clients’ interests. Since then, I have dedicated my practice to providing guidance as a trust and estate attorney.
My practice is rooted in a deep understanding of the complexities families face when planning for the future or resolving disputes after the passing of a loved one. I have successfully represented clients in a wide range of matters, including will and trust contests, breach of fiduciary duty claims, and financial elder abuse claims.
I established LawSmyth, APC with the specific vision of delivering legal services that prioritize value, efficiency, and personalized support. I believe my clients benefit not only from my legal skills but also from my commitment to honest counsel and practical solutions.
My philosophy is simple: the law should serve people, not overwhelm them. That means providing thoughtful and effective legal guidance rooted in a genuine care for my clients. I believe that the best legal outcomes start with listening. I take the time to understand each client’s goals, concerns, and family dynamics. Estate matters are never just legal; they are personal.
Based in Los Angeles County, I serve as a trusted advisor to individuals, families, and fiduciaries, including private professional fiduciaries across the state of California.

Personal Background
I was born and raised in the City of Los Angeles. Never far from home, I spent my childhood years working my way through Third Street Elementary School and John Burroughs Middle School. Growing up in the 1990s, school days included multiplication tables, book fairs, and computer labs. Outside of school, my days were filled playing basketball at the park, bike rides around the neighborhood, and episodes of Saved by the Bell and Boy Meets World.
For high school, I attended Beverly Hills High School (Go Normans!) where I played basketball and volleyball. After graduating in 2000, I attended the University of California at Irvine where I majored in Sociology. Unbeknownst to me, my background in sociology helps me everyday in my legal practice. It gives me a deeper appreciation understanding of family dynamics and the human elements that often underlie estate planning and litigation matters.
After college, I stayed true to my Los Angeles roots and attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. There, along with meeting lifelong friends and colleagues and witnessing another Lakers championship run, I was able to sharpen my legal writing skills and develop the analytical thinking needed to successfully practice law. Law school allowed me to find the specific way in which I would help people, something that has always been extremely important to me.
For fun, I enjoys working out, listening to podcasts (especially true crime podcasts), watching documentaries and movies, playing WrestleMania with my son, and going out to eat delicious food with my loving and supportive wife.
